The standards, before the inheritance.

Legacy
What is still useful when you are not in the room.
Identity is who you are this month. Legacy is what remains after that. A child who knows where the papers are. A younger man who learned a clean way to apologise because he watched you do it. A household that is not a mystery if you are suddenly gone.
Most men postpone this until it feels ceremonial. A will. A speech. A later version of themselves who has more time. The later version does not write the note. You do, on an ordinary week, or it does not get written.
This is not a brand and it is not a performance of importance. It is stewardship. Put the useful thing where someone else can find it.
Why what remains is a responsibility
Someone already depends on you, even if you do not have children. A partner who would have to reconstruct the accounts. A parent. A colleague who only knows the work if you are there to explain it. If you vanished for a month, what would they be unable to do?
Future orientation here is plain. You are not trying to be remembered as impressive. You are trying not to leave a mess that other people have to solve in the dark. That includes money, passwords, the name of the doctor, and the standard you actually lived.
The example is the part you cannot file. Children copy the tone, the repair, and the dodge. If you have no children, friends and younger men still copy the shortcut. What you repeat is what you teach.
Stewardship before a speech
Start with what a fair person would need in a bad week. Where the money is. What is owed. Who to call. A single page is enough. A locked folder nobody else can open is not a legacy. It is a puzzle.
Then the contribution that is already yours. A skill you can show someone in an hour. A way of running a job that does not depend on you being the hero. Mentorship is that hour, repeated, not a title.
Succession is the same idea at work or in a family business. If only you know how the thing runs, you have not provided. You have made yourself a bottleneck. Write the next person in, while you can still correct the page.

Long consequences, small actions
A kept promise this year is part of what they will trust later. So is the apology that arrived without being extracted. So is the buffer that meant a repair did not become a crisis. Legacy is those repeats, plus the record someone can use.
Do not announce a dynasty. Name one person and one thing they should be able to find or do without you. Then put it there. Review it once a season. If it is still only in your head, it has not been left.
Put it into practice
Twenty minutes. One page someone else could use.
- Write where the important papers and accounts live, in words one other person can follow.
- Name who is covered if you are not available, and the one gap you will close this month.
- Teach one thing you know, plainly, to a person who is actually in your life. Not a post. A conversation or a page.
Take it further with Iron Compass
The Iron Compass app can hold the commitment and the review. Open it at ironcompassai.com/app. The page above still works on paper.
Identity is the standards you are keeping now. This page is what those standards leave behind. Keep them separate.
Keep going
A neighbouring domain, and pieces from the journal you can read today.
What you put in place, not the story you hope is left behind.
Standards worth keeping long enough that someone else can recognise them.
